Site Visit w/ General Assembly :: Part 1

3

We could barely contain ourselves this week when New York Magazine selected theSweeten as one of the Best of New York for 2012!

In our euphoric state we joined Sarah Zames, the founder of General Assembly a design firm out of Williamsburg Brooklyn, for our weekly site visit.  theSweeten matched Sarah with the owner of this studio renovation located in Brooklyn Heights. They worked together on this redesign focusing mainly on the kitchen and living areas where they’re updating cabinetry, appliances, and floors, opening up an archway, and redoing the ceilings to add extra sound insulation. It’s going to be such a sweet little spot when it’s done!

As the construction progressed, it turned out the apartment was going to require a bit more retrofitting than was originally expected, including replacing all the electrical–which hasn’t been updated since the 1950′s!

Once all the outdated electrical conduits had been pulled out, what remained made the room look like an ant farm.

Check out this awesome pair of construction stilts –We can’t say we weren't tempted to give them a try!

The hole in the wall behind the drain pipe…yikes.

Sarah showed us some of the project drawings and explained that they’ve removed an archway to make space for a kitchen island with plenty of seating. They’ll also be adding a large closet as well as a nook to anchor in the bed.

Here’s the footprint of the former archway.

Next week we’ll have more progress from this project to report…can’t wait to the the finished space!
