Meet the Contractor: Santiago

Sweeten handpicks the best local general contractors for major renovations. The screening process can be a bit technical (licensing, insurance, references, portfolios, experience and beyond…!) but we love getting to know these experts and want to share their stories with you – where they’re from, what they love most about construction, and what renovation challenges they face. Today, meet Santiago!

Where are you from and how long have you been in construction?

Originally, I’m from Spain. I have been in business for 15 years.

How did you get into construction?

My uncle used to own his own business, so I started working for him at 17. That’s what I have been doing ever since, and 15 years ago in 2001, I opened up my company.

Who is your ideal client?

I like clients who are open to creative solutions and input.

What do you love most about construction?

I like to be creative and challenge myself.

If you weren’t doing construction, what would you be doing?

I would be maybe flipping houses, which is not the same thing as construction — almost, but not the same.

What do you like about Sweeten? How has it helped with your business?

Not only does Sweeten send me more clients, they also make the renovation process easy. Right now, projects from Sweeten are about 50% of what we bid on, which is a lot.

What is a challenge that homeowners have when starting a renovation project?

There are a lot of different pieces to consider. For example, in the kitchen, there are faucets, sinks, cabinets, flooring…it is very overwhelming, but we try to make it easy.

Subway or cab?

Both!

Favorite New York City restaurant?

El Porron, which is a Spanish restaurant.
