Meet the Contractor: Evros

Sweeten handpicks the best local general contractors for major renovations. The screening process can be a bit technical (licensing, insurance, references, portfolios, experience and beyond…!) but we love getting to know these experts and want to share their stories with you – where they’re from, what they love most about construction, and what renovation challenges they face. Today, meet Evros!

Where are you from and how long have you been in construction?

Originally, I’m from Cyprus and I’ve been in construction for about 30 years now.

How did you get into construction?

I’m a civil engineer — I studied civil engineering at the University of New Haven. Then, I got my master’s degree in engineering management and got a job at a construction site and the rest is history!

What do you love most about construction?

Having dinner with a client and then having lunch with the guys the next day. Both of them are awesome.

What is the biggest challenge renovating in New York?

New York is a very unique place to work. You’ve got the traffic, you’ve got the regulations, you’ve got the buildings, you’ve got the management companies that have all these kinds of special rules. It is tough.

What do you like about Sweeten? How has it helped with your business?

Sweeten has the ability to screen clients in the same way they screen us. They educate the client as far as their budget is concerned and when we go in, they know that their budget is supposed to be where it’s supposed to be.

What do you think is the biggest misconception that homeowners have when starting a renovation project?

Renovating can be very costly and a lot of homeowners don’t realize they don’t have the budget for what they want.

Favorite New York City building or structure?
