What do you love most about construction and contracting?
There’s something different every day, you know? You are not sitting at a desk. There are always new challenges and opportunities to meet new people.
Who is your ideal client?
Someone who’s been through a renovation perhaps and has feedback because they know what to expect. It’s a little tricky balancing expectations with what’s realistic.
What’s the first thing you want a client to know when they start a renovation with you?
Probably timing is the best thing to sort out ahead of time. Also, if they’re going to try to live in their home during the renovation, I like to let them know what that experience is going to be like.
If clients have questions or concerns, how would you like them to address it?
As soon as there is something bothering them or they are unsure about, address it quickly and directly with me. I’ve had people who would not say anything for a month and then come to me with a list of things. That’s not really productive because now we are past the point of no return, there are sour feelings, and I’m trying to rectify the situation.
What is your favorite kind of project?
I like to do a true reconfiguration. You walk into a place and it doesn’t look the same at all. In the city maybe it’s a combination: they have a one-bedroom and a studio and are combining them, and it just looks totally different than it did initially.
If you weren’t a general contractor, what would you be doing?
Well, I was actually in finance for 10 years. That kind of morphed into investing and flipping houses, which morphed into client work.
